V druhé polovině třicátých let vyvíjely americké firmy méně výkonné stroje než ty, které byly produkovány v Evropě. Mezi ně patřil stíhací letoun Curtiss Hawk 75/P-36.

Vývoj
Letoun Curtiss P-36 byl zkonstruován na základě soutěže v roce 1935. Celokovový letoun byl poháněn motorem R-1670 o výkonu 850 hp který byl však slabý. Stejně nedostatečná byla i výzbroj, která se skládala z jednoho kulometu ráže 12,7 mm a jednoho kulometu ráže 7,62 mm. Armáda typ přijala, roku 1937 si ho objednala a o rok později přicházely k útvarům první stroje. Průběžně však docházelo k modernizaci, do letadel byl instalován nový motor Pratt-Whitney R-1830-S1C3-G o výkonu 1050 hp, byla posilněna výzbroj. Roku 1938 byly letouny dodány do Francie, kde se po vpádu německých vojsk staly překvapivě zdatnými soupeři německých strojů. Po pádu Francie byly kořistní stroje dodány do Finska, kde bojovaly proti letounům Rudé armády. Další stroje odebrala Velká Británie a použila je v Indii a v severní Africe pod názvem Mohawk. P-36 byly dodávány i do dalších států. Celkem bylo vyrobeno 900 kusů všech verzí.
Použití
I přes konstrukční zastaralost stroje byl letoun Curtiss P-36 významnou posilou pro státy bojující proti Německu.
